Appetizer of the Day

Appetizer #3 of Set 2:

Define author's purpose.  What is an author's purpose in writing a detective story.

Today's Assignment

You will be reading "The Witness for the Prosecution" by Agatha Christie.

You are going to practice taking notes for longer pieces of writing.  Create a document, name it Notes for "The Witness for the Prosecution".  Briefly (3-5 sentences) summarize each page of the short story.

Example:

Page 1:  We are introduced to Mr. Mayherne, a solicitor, and his client, Mr. Vole.  Mr. Vole is a young man accused of murder, but claims that he is innocent.  Mr. Mayherne acknowledges, as does Mr. Vole, that all the evidence strongly points to the fact that Mr. Vole committed the murder, but he says he believes he did not do it. We are then introduced to Miss Emily French, an elderly woman that Mr. Vole helped as she was trying to cross the street with parcels and was almost hit by a bus. We can assume based on the conversation between Mr. Mayherne and Mr. Vole that this is the woman he is accused of murdering.
